How to effectively protect your exotic wood deck

The Importance of Maintaining Your Terrace

A terrace that stands the test of time is a terrace that’s well cared for. It all starts with protecting it using the right products.

Starbrite offers the best solution with its Outdoor Wood Protector, ensuring all your surfaces withstand the passage of time.

How to Use the Protector and Saturator?

1. Precautions Before Applying the Protector/Saturator

Make sure the wood hasn’t been factory-treated with a Protector. If it has, wait for it to wear off naturally—usually within 3-4 months. First, check that the boards, once installed, are clean and that the wood grain is open so that the Starbrite Outdoor Wood Protector/Saturator can penetrate deep into the fibers. This is the key to effective, long-lasting protection. To achieve this, thoroughly clean the terrace with fresh water using a hose without too much pressure (and never a high-pressure washer!) to remove dust embedded in the fibers. Exotic woods, often very “oily” like teak or ipe, quickly become saturated with dust, especially if some boards needed sanding during installation. If the wood was stored for several weeks before installation, don’t hesitate to use Starbrite Cleaner & Brightener for the best results.

Once this step is complete, allow the boards to dry thoroughly.

Recommended tools:

A scrubbing brush for surfaces up to 30 m². For larger areas, we recommend using a pressure washer (not exceeding 10-15 bar) or a single-disc machine fitted with a medium or hard brush.

2. Applying the Single-Coat Protector/Saturator

Once the wood is completely dry, the grain open and free from any dirt or wood dust, you can apply the Protector/Saturator. Allow at least 24 hours of dry weather so the Protector/Saturator can fully cure.

Shake or mix the container well before use. Work in small sections using a brush or roller, making sure to spread the Protector/Saturator evenly and apply only a minimal amount of product. The long-term effectiveness depends on how well the Starbrite Wood Protector/Saturator penetrates the wood fibers!

The Protector/Saturator should be dry to the touch in about 30 minutes at an average temperature of 18-20°C. If not, wipe off any excess product with a clean cloth.

SINGLE-COAT product—apply in a very thin layer. Do not try to saturate the wood. Do not apply in very hot weather and avoid applying in direct sunlight.

Recommended tools: Smooth or grooved surfaces: roller, brush, cloth.
