Grill with complete peace of mind!

Le BBQ en toute sécurité !

The sun is shining and the warm days are back, but with lockdown, we’re all looking for ways to keep busy… Isn’t this the perfect moment to fire up your first barbecue of the year? Absolutely. But before you get started, it’s a good idea to review a few essential safety rules for a worry-free BBQ. Here they are!

No need to remind you that now is not the time to crowd emergency services—already overwhelmed—because of a barbecue injury… So let’s take a few precautions to avoid that.

1. Choose an open, clear space

Don’t set up your Kokko just anywhere. Make sure to place it in a spot that’s clear of any flammable materials: wood, branches, dry leaves, trees, chemicals, and so on. Keep at least 1.50m of clearance all around. The ground should also be stable. And of course, never use your barbecue indoors—the smoke from burning charcoal can be dangerous.

2. Choose a natural way to light your fire

If newspaper alone isn’t enough to get your barbecue going, you’re probably using firelighters. Whether they come as briquettes, sticks, or wool, always choose natural products and never use gasoline or lighter fluid—they can cause dangerous flare-ups. Leave your lighter in your pocket and reach for a box of matches instead.

3. Use the right utensils

Forget the table fork for turning sausages on the grill. To avoid burns, use special barbecue utensils—long-handled tools that keep your hands away from the flames and embers, and with heat-resistant coatings. It’s also worth investing in a pair of heat-resistant gloves, which are more practical for handling dishes and utensils than standard barbecue mitts, though those can work too.

4. Keep an eye on it from start to finish

Once your barbecue is lit, it’s crucial to keep it under constant supervision, especially if it’s windy or there are children around. Children should never go near it, even after cooking, as the embers stay hot for hours. In case of a fire, always have water, a fire extinguisher, or sand nearby so you can put it out quickly and prevent it from spreading.
